The Virginia Storytelling Alliance Annual Storytelling Gathering
“Going Higher, Digging Deeper”
Saturday March 9, 2019 9:00 am–Late
Church of the Holy Comforter, 4819 Monument Avenue, Richmond
Most VASA members are not beginner storytellers. This year’s Gathering Workshop day is designed to offer opportunities to get better at the storytelling craft. We are not offering ‘how to tell a story’ workshops or ‘where to find material’ workshops. Newbies will benefit from attending, but help with those topics can be arranged at a later time.
The first part of the Workshop day is designed to move to a higher level’ in storytelling. The workshop will focus on receiving and incorporating storytelling feedback; on listening with an ear to help a teller improve; and on principles of story coaching.
The second part of the Workshop day is story coaching. Using the listening and feedback skills presented in the morning, along with the skills of experienced coaches, the afternoon session will provide attendees a chance to go ‘deeper’ in telling and listening. In a small group, tellers will be able to tell a story and get specific feedback to make your story better. You will also be able to listen to stories and practice good story coaching.
For the last 5 years The Gathering has been held in Culpeper alongside Culpeper Tells Storytelling Festival. When The Gathering was being planned Culpeper Tells had stated they were dissolving, so there was to be no festival this year. TOpening the location for The Gathering can be anywhere in the state.VASA was offered free space at The Church of the Holy Comforter, Richmond.
Traditionally The Gathering has been a Friday, Saturday and Sunday event. This year they are experimenting with a new format, a one-day Gathering. Although, there will be an optional event the night before Friday, March 8, at 7:00 pm.
Storytellers Channel is offering complimentary tickets to Gathering attendees for our Stories Matter! Showcase. And there will be a Story Swap after the show. (See below)
